TeenHealthArticles

TeenHealthAticles

Where can one find TeenHealthArticles that cover a wide range of teen problems? There are a lot of teen health issues that our teen's currently face. It can be difficult to live a normal life with all the emotions that teen's experience, as well as all of the peer pressure that comes with being a teen. For this reason, we have composed a series ofTeenHealthArticles to help teenagers, parents, teachers, etc. deal with the issues, as well as understand the reasons behind certain types of behavior.

TeenHealthArticles

You're not likely to find a series of teen health articles on the web that touch upon some of the more important issues such as teen suicide, eating disorders, drugs, and peer pressure. It is important that when researching why your teen acts the way they do that theTeenHealthArticles you are reading are up-to-date and relevant. Each year, there are new fads and new types of peer pressure that arise. For example, there are new drugs that your teen may want to try that may have not been around when you were younger.

TeenHealthAticles and teen suicide

One of the things you might have noticed is that teen suicide rates have risen over the past few years due to reasons that were unheard of decades ago. TeenHealthArticles are filled with information on why these unfortunate events continue to occur. These days, there are more bullies in school than there were years ago. As you read teen health articles and research information, your teen isn't just being bullied because of the clothing he or she wears. Nowadays, if your child is caught wearing something out of style, he or she may be beaten up or possibly even murdered (especially if being picked on by a "gang"). There are plenty of teen health articles that suggest your teen is being picked on because of the drugs he or she isn't doing, as well as the cuss words he or she isn't using. This is a very scary thing, however, as it is occurring every day.

Much of what teenagers believe, wear, as well as how they act is greatly influenced by the media. When researching information inTeenHealthArticles on why they act the way they do, you'll quickly find this to be true. The music they listen to says a lot about the way they think. If you notice your teenager is into extremely hard metal with messages about suicide or providing messages that promote depressive thoughts, your teen may be "molding" to that type of music. Likewise, teen health articles also suggest listening to gangster rap may also signify that there are underlying problems that you may not be aware of.

TeenHealthAticles in general

Another thing you will find out when reading teen health articles is that teens often put on a "front" and hide their true behaviors from their parents. They know that if they get caught doing drugs, listening to certain types of music, associated with certain types of individuals, and wearing certain types of clothing that they may be forced to stop and they simply do not want to do that. In teen health articles, you'll read about all of these things and learn how you can put an end to this type of behavior without upsetting your teen or causing their friends to turn their backs on them. teen health articles ultimately will help you to come up with ways to make sure your teen lives a healthy, normal life without harm.

acne

It targets the young

It is no secret at this time that zits tends to appear in most sufferers during the teen stage of their lives. Funny enough (not really), this is at the time that a lot of young people tend to be very insecure on a social level. You might see, especially amongst ladies, that they may begin to act in antisocial ways at this stage of life. As young people mature the behavior often ceases with the cessation of the zits.

Very basic causes

There are a lot of things that could cause you to suffer from a skin infection, and they could include any number of components ranging from internal to external. One thing that no one can afford to overlook though is ones family history. It has become of note that a lot of people who have had parents suffer from the condition suffer from it as well. Noting this, families should begin to take preventive measures. Hormonal activity is without doubt one of the many factors that could result in you having this skin condition. The release of hormones in your system as you age is certainly one type of culprit, but also phenomena such as your menstrual cycle and pubescence are elements as well. You would do well to be informed of these as you go about your daily business. If you can keep an eye on your hormones then you just might be able to forestall the disease.

This module will explore acne, which includes a ranking blog site called fixacne.org and related articles. Read and learn about this ubiquitous problem. Please click the links for more information.

How to Make Your Old Muscles Perform Like Young Muscles

Antioxidants boost muscle performance during exercise. The best antioxidant foods.Keeping muscles toned as you age can be a challenge. Stiffness can set in, and flexibility is lost. Bending over is harder than it used to be and carrying heavy things has to be done carefully. Exercising becomes more of a challenge, too. But here’s the catch — the more you keep your muscles in shape, the longer you’ll reap the benefits. It might feel like everything is stiff and sore, but stop using your muscles and everything suddenly gets a whole lot worse.

So you’ll want to keep your muscles toned as much as possible. This is not always easy do when you have health issues to deal with or find it difficult to schedule physical activity into your daily routine. Some forms of exercise may be better suited to you. If you have knee problems, swimming might be the way to go, for example.

Now, what about diet? Does it have a role to play in all of this? Absolutely, according to researchers at the Department of Medicine, University of Utah. It seems that antioxidants could actually help boost arterial function and make older muscles feel like young muscles during exercise.

This latest health news comes courtesy of a study performed on 28 participants. Twelve participants were given an “antioxidant cocktail,” while another eight young and eight older subjects performed exercise with placebo or while taking the antioxidants. The researchers found that, in the older subjects, the antioxidant cocktail restored blood vessel dilation to match that of the young.

Muscle strength is one of the obvious signs of aging in the body. Muscle strength usually starts declining when you reach your 40s, but can drop dramatically after age 60. This loss of muscle can become a major risk factor for becoming frail and disabled.

So boost your nutritional health with lots of vitamin-C and vitamin-E foods — both powerful antioxidants. Here’s a quick list to get you started:

–Parsley

–Broccoli

–Strawberries

–Oranges

–Wheat germ

–Sunflower oil

–Safflower oil

Why Caffeine May Affect Fertility

In most doctors’ advice to women looking to get pregnant, avoiding caffeine is generally recognized as a staple. Cut down on the coffee, boost your chances of becoming pregnant. A brand new study has found out why this may be true, so women can understand why they should grab a bottle of water instead of that energy drink.

Caffeine reduces muscle activity in the fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from a woman’s ovaries to her womb. The new experiments were conducted in mice, but this finding goes a long way towards explaining why drinking caffeinated drinks can reduce a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant. It is published now in the “British Journal of Pharmacology.”

Human eggs are microscopically small, but need to travel to a woman’s womb if she is going to have a successful pregnancy. Although the process is essential for a successful pregnancy, scientists know little about how eggs move through the muscular fallopian tubes. It was generally assumed that “cilia” (tiny hair-like projections) in the lining of the tubes escort eggs along assisted by muscle contractions in the tube walls.

In the new study, the researchers discovered that caffeine stops the actions of specialized cells in the wall of the tubes. These cells coordinate tube contractions, so that when they are prevented from working, eggs can’t move down the tubes. In fact, these muscle contractions play a bigger role than the beating cilia in moving the egg towards the womb.

Therein lies the intriguing explanation as to why women with high caffeine consumption often have a more difficult time conceiving. This discovery carries benefits for a huge portion of the population — and doctors as well.

This finding helps women who are trying to get pregnant. But it also provides doctors a better understanding of how the fallopian tubes work so they can better treat pelvic inflammation and sexually-transmitted disease. It also may help explain “ectopic” pregnancy, where embryos get stuck in the tube and begin developing, causing an extremely painful and dangerous situation.

Pass this nugget of health news along to those you know who are actively trying to get pregnant. And, if you all into this category yourself, when you go out for a coffee, make it a decaf.

How Supplements Could Battle Cancer

Onward we march toward the end of this series that examines the use of supplements and cancer and chemotherapy. Here I look at “mucositis,” inflammation along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, beginning with the mouth, and bone marrow suppression.Onward we march toward the end of this series that examines the use of supplements and cancer and chemotherapy. Here I look at “mucositis,” inflammation along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, beginning with the mouth, and bone marrow suppression.

Symptoms of mucositis include mouth sores, heartburn and diarrhea. The worst chemotherapy culprits include: carboplatin, doxorubicin, etoposide, 5-FU (fluorouracil), irinotecan, methotrexate, and topotecan. Risk factors for chemotherapy-related diarrhea include getting radiation therapy as well, older age, having colitis, and having a tumor in the GI tract.

A recent review on the use of natural remedies in the treatment of mouth sores found that simple interventions such as ice, honey, and topical vitamin E oil can decrease symptoms. It also mentions glutamine rinse (up to 30 grams a day) and aloe or chamomile mouthwashes as promising agents to treat this common condition.

Three potentially useful supplements were mentioned in a review article on chemotherapy-induced diarrhea:

1. Probiotics: There is some evidence that probiotics are useful in radiation-induced diarrhea, but not in chemotherapy-induced diarrhea. Since chemotherapy weakens the immune system, patients may be at an increased risk of potentially life-threatening infections from the use of probiotics.

2. Glutamine: Glutamine offers protection to the GI tract against chemotherapy-induced damage. Taking six grams, three times a day for 15 days, starting five days before the first course of chemotherapy has been shown to be effective in preventing chemotherapy-induced diarrhea.

3. Kampo medicine: Its effectiveness for diarrhea is mixed . Kampo medicine (the Chinese herb “Haneshashin-to”) may help alleviate diarrhea in advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Now for the bone marrow, which produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Many drugs used in chemotherapy suppress the bone marrow, leading to a reduced number of red blood cells, resulting in fatigue, a reduced number of white blood cells, leading to increased risk of infection, and a reduced number of platelets, with increased risk of clotting problems and easy bruising. Bone marrow suppression occurs between seven and 10 days after chemotherapy and subsides after three to four weeks.

Extracts from Coriolus mushrooms, in particular “polysaccharide krestin” (PSK), were shown to kill cancer cells and bolster the immune system. For over 30 years, PSK at a dose of three grams a day has been added to the traditional chemotherapy to treat various cancers (e.g. lung stomach, leukemia) in Japan. PSK boosts the immune system by raising the white blood cells, natural killer T cells, and antibody response in cancer patients. There was meta-analysis of three clinical trials involving 1,094 patients with colorectal cancer who all underwent surgery and were later treated with the standard chemotherapy with and without PSK. This study shows that PSK improved both survival and disease-free survival in colorectal cancer.

Other extracts that have shown positive results in boosting the immune system include agaricus, AHCC (a newly discovered functional food) and mistletoe (“Iscador”) extracts.

How Pakistan Killed My Father

Will we not wake up now? Our homes are burning and our roads covered with dust. Every single moment, there are people around the world that are fighting for their lives against cancer, AIDS, and other perilous diseases. Patients realize that the doctors are doing the best they can and medical insurance and malpractice will immediately kick in if any error occurs. Due to the extensive monitoring and control of hospital processes and surgical procedures, doctors in the West team up to ensure availability of the best medical solutions possible irrespective of the odds.

Hundreds of doctors are sued annually and medical licenses canceled for life. Though these blatant actions can never revive mankind, they at least provide a controlled environment in which human error due to neglect and miscalculations are penalized. A proper and controlled hospital system will always keep the doctors on their toes, improve medical processes, hone surgical procedures, give birth to new technology and drive easier methods to diagnose disease and ailments.

Man can now rest assured that his life will be given the due attention if at any time his heart beats stop or his body shivers into a state of perplexity. Maybe one of the reasons behind the exponential increase of health care in the United States is that they realize that the human spirit and mind is something worth cherishing. America is the only country in the world where a handicap can become a president and a black man whose father once toiled the fields is elected. It is a world that commits its solemn pledge to mankind and hopes and believes that each child has in him the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln and the drive of Thomas Edison. Each child has the opportunity to become a hero. Each individual is priceless. Anybody saved might have the cure for AIDS, cancer or rebuild America. Is that not something worth a national commitment?

Pakistan has an abundance of children laying aimlessly in the streets and dying each day of malnutrition. Hundreds of people die without a root cause and are buried under the precipice of religious dialect. Pakistan has one of the highest malpractice deaths in the world. The major cause is that there is no control on the hospital methods. The ministers of Health have either constructed their own pharmacies or ensured that their relatives have become permanent employees of the government institutions. Any minister ready to challenge this? Can anyone give me an example of a hospital that has ever suspended its doctors due to malpractice and shun the worst root cause of death- human stupidity?

I don’t believe that Pakistan realizes what dies each day. It is not another innocent bystander or another poor soul. That boy perishing away in the hospital due to the fake medicines could have been another Allama Iqbal or even Tariq Bin Waleed. That girl who died yesterday since no one attended her in time could have been the next prime minister of this nation and rebuilt it. But why do we not see these stars shining and believe in the spirit of Pakistan? Who has allowed us to bury our tomorrow? Our priceless heroes die each day whereas our villains are kept alive. Why would any nation do this?

My father walked to the Punjab Medical Institute. He was a professor at a very prestigious university in Pakistan. They wrongly diagnosed him and gave him the wrong injection. His liver ruptured and that was the last day I had with my father. That day I had met him again after coming home from work. This time he was sleeping and could not hear me. Imagine how my soul felt. Imagine how my world dissipated. These doctors had no remorse. My shouts and screams did not have any effect on the staff at the institute. Now I realize that hundreds of men and women shout at them each day and they have become prone to it. We can only voice our anger. There is no institute or governance where we can show them the pieces of the puzzle and suspend the licenses.

Punjab Institute of Cardiology killed my father three years ago. That doctor has now been promoted. Though he had apologized once he realized that we were influential people but the sad part is that there is no verdict for malpractice. My father walked to the hospital. Not on a wheel chair or in an ambulance. But walked by himself with a smile embarked on his aged petal lips. Do you know of any hospital that kills its patients that walk in?

I told my stories to my friends. Hundreds of new stories were communicated to me in tears and sad hearts. Someone had a similar incident. A nurse had given an overdose of sleeping pills to my neighbor’s sons who died at 18. My aunt’s father died after he was wrongly diagnosed for cancer. My friend’s mother died in service hospital since it was a strike and the doctors did not attend. I have kept all the stories in a dairy.

I will publish this book one day. But till that day, I write this story with an empty heart. What can we do? Should we burn the hospitals and shoot the doctors on our own? Should we create the institutes of governance? But how? The ministry of Health is heedless of this story. It has been sent to them multiple of times and still we see our tomorrow being injected with wrong medicines and people dying without a cause.

Each day Pakistan will kill its stars of tomorrow. If Pakistan had saved my father, he would have taught another generation. He might have met his grandchildren. Maybe my angel could have met her grandfather instead of staring at his pictures. Maybe I could have had time to say I love you and given him hope and love. Maybe the hundreds of people like me could have had another moment of solace and tranquility. Can I blame my country for the death of my father? I have written a poem for my father; please visit my blog http://buildpakistantogether.blogspot.com/ for reading the poem.

Many in North America may remember the E. coli outbreak in Walkerton, Ontario, Canada, which caused six deaths and serious illness in many more in May of 2000.

Although most strains of E. coli are relatively harmless, a strain called enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) is particularly serious, because it can be fatal. EHEC is typically transmitted through contaminated foods such as undercooked or raw meat. EHEC symptoms include stomach cramping and diarrhea and eventually hemorrhagic colitis, or bloody diarrhea. If untreated, EHEC can lead to anemia and kidney failure.

This latest deadly outbreak, which originated in northern Germany, is believed to be caused by contaminated vegetables, though the exact source of the outbreak is still undetermined. For now, medical officials are advising everyone to stay away from raw cucumbers, leaf lettuce, or tomatoes.

In order to safeguard your nutritional health, there are a few precautions you can take. While it is impossible to predict or know if a certain food group is likely to contain E. coli (the tragedy of Walkerton was that E. coli was found in the drinking water supply), you can reduce your risks by taking an interest in the food you purchase and consume.

– Know where food comes from: Research local farmers. Head to a farmer’s market for local, fresh produce, meats and cheese and you can actually have a conversation with farmers. Ask them about their operation. For imported items, do some research and find out where they are from.

– Keep the kitchen clean: Wash plates, utensils, pots and pans in soapy hot water so bacteria won’t survive. Do the same for counter tops, cutting boards, and the fridge. Toss sponges, rags, and dishcloths in the washing machine each week. Consider sanitizing the kitchen every so often. Mix a teaspoon of bleach with a quart of water and scrub your cutting boards, counters, stove, and kitchen sink.

– Think perishable: At the supermarket, leave perishable foods until last, so they don’t go bad. Get your cans, bottles, and boxes of food first. Make grocery shopping the last item on your to-do list before you go home.

– Pack properly: In the supermarket, make sure produce is kept separate from meat, seafood, and poultry. Don’t forget you can use a cooler (with ice) for frozen or perishable items for the trip home.

– Inspect food: Eggs should come un-cracked. Veggies and fruit should be un-bruised. Lids shouldn’t be loose. Jars should lack dents and cracks. Meat, fish, and salads at your supermarket should be sold in a clean area.

– Practice meat safety: Thaw meat in the fridge. Cook poultry and meat thoroughly. Consider a meat thermometer to gauge temperature.

– Wash produce well: Wash fruits and veggies properly to remove dirt and potential lingering pesticides.

– One last bit of health advice: Wash your hands frequently.

Northern families to benefit from new cancer lodge

Northern families to benefit from new cancer lodge

PRINCE GEORGE – B.C. has committed $2 million towards the $10-million capital campaign for the Kordyban Lodge to support cancer patients and their families.

The 2,323 square-metre (25,000-square-foot), 36-bed lodge will offer accommodation for individuals and their caregivers travelling to the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North and will serve cancer patients from communities throughout Northern B.C.

The lodge will provide full-meal services as well as other features to support patients, including a family room, the spiritual and meditation room, a lounge, massage therapy room, library, activity room, an exercise facility, and wig and prosthetics rooms.

Construction on the lodge is expected to start in July and it is scheduled to open to patients at the same time as the Centre for the North, in the fall of 2012.

The Kordyban Lodge is named to recognize a $2-million donation from the Mary Kordyban Foundation. This single largest private donation honours the memory of longtime Prince George resident and business owner Bill Kordyban. The lodge’s Novak Family Spiritual and Meditation Room and the West Fraser Timber Lounge are named in honour of $1-million gifts from the Novak family and West Fraser Timber.

The lodge will support cancer patients from rural communities across the North and reflects government’s commitment to ensure the provision of services, including access to health care, is looked at through a rural lens. The Kordyban Lodge is also an important component of the Province’s $106-million Northern Cancer Control Strategy, a partnership of the Province, BC Cancer Agency, Provincial Health Services Authority and Northern Health. The strategy is focused on reducing the impact of cancer in the North, and includes a range of prevention, detection and cancer care services.

Quotes:

Shirley Bond, Prince George-Valemount MLA:

“The new cancer centre will provide top-notch care to residents from the North, closer to home; and, the Kordyban Lodge helps complete the package by providing accommodation for patients who need to travel to the cancer centre for care. Northern families will have the chance to support one another during very challenging times. I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to create the Kordyban Lodge and am proud that our government has become an important partner."

Pat Bell, Prince George-Mackenzie MLA:

“The lodge is a great example of the investments we are making to support cancer care and treatment across northern B.C. Through our multifaceted cancer strategy we are ensuring that patients have access to the latest advances in cancer care as close to their home communities as possible.”

John Rustad, Nechako Lakes MLA:

“A cancer diagnosis can have a devastating impact on families, and having supports to allow patients to stay closer to home can make a huge difference. This new lodge will have all the comforts of home and will mean one less worry for families when a loved one needs to travel for cancer care.”

Leonard Schein, chair, board of directors, Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon:

"On behalf of the board, I would like to first thank the Northern Lodge Capital Campaign Cabinet lead by chair, Henry Novak for their remarkable work in raising funds so quickly for the Kordyban Lodge. Second, I would like to thank the local MLAs Pat Bell and John Rustad and in particular, Shirley Bond for all their assistance in helping to secure this $2-million grant. And lastly, to thank our Minister of Health, Michael de Jong and our new Premier of B.C., Christy Clark for their financial commitment to the North and especially its families."

Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health board chair:

“The Kordyban Lodge is just one aspect of our Northern Cancer Control Strategy to strengthen cancer care delivery for residents of the North. Northern Health appreciates the strong support for this cause from so many private donors and the Province."

Mary Kordyban, Mary Kordbyban Foundation:

“When illness threatens families it’s natural for life’s priorities to change. The Kordyban Lodge will serve as a vital component to those on a cancer journey and we are honoured to have it named after our family.”

Quick Facts:

One in three British Columbians will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime, with about 22,000 new cancer patients in B.C. projected in 2011.

More than 1,000 of these patients will reside in the North.

The B.C. Cancer Agency predicts that in the next ten years, new cancer diagnoses in the North will rise by more than 38 per cent.

When it is complete in the fall of 2012, the new 5,000-square-metre (54,000-square-foot) BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North will become the sixth regional cancer centre in B.C.

Jim Pattison Outpatient Centre officially opened

Jim Pattison Outpatient Centre officially opened

SURREY – The $237-million Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre was officially opened today – on time and on budget - making it the first of its kind in British Columbia to provide additional health-care capacity for families and communities across the region.

What makes the Outpatient Centre unique is that it offers day surgery, diagnostic procedures such as lab, X-ray, CT and MRI scans, and biopsies, and specialized health programs, all within one building. Outpatients are those who receive scheduled medical care and do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. Programs and services begin operation over a three-week period beginning June 1, 2011, with full operation commencing June 14, 2011.

Jim Pattison donated $5 million towards the new Outpatient Centre to help raise funds for additional equipment to attract leading physicians to Surrey. The community matched his gift through donations to the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation’s 100 Days to Give campaign, which concludes May 31, 2011.

Designed to improve the patient experience for outpatients, many programs and services are moving over from Surrey Memorial Hospital to help relieve congestion.

Some of these innovative steps include express check-in kiosks that patients with scheduledappointments can check in at upon arrival. The kiosks, which will be used throughout the centre, confirm the patients’ arrival and provide them with directions on where to proceed, while alerting the clinic to prepare for the patient, creating workflow efficiencies. The kiosks are available in English and Punjabi, with more languages to come.

The Outpatient Centre will deliver a number of new services not currently available in Fraser Health, such as:

· A breast health clinic that will diagnose suspected breast cancer in 21 days or less.

· Urology services, including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy to non-invasively treat kidney stones and other stones in the gallbladder and liver, previously only available in Vancouver.

· The first comprehensive HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C clinic in the Fraser Valley.

· An anticoagulation management clinic that offers a new care model to improve medication management for patients at risk for blood clots.

The Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre is a public-private partnership between Fraser Health and BC Healthcare Solutions (BCHS). BCHS is responsible for the design, building, financing and maintenance of the facility. Fraser Health will retain ownership of the facility and provide all health and medical services.

Funding for capital projects provided by the Province is in addition to more than $2 billion provided to Fraser Health by the Province each year to meet the health-care needs in the region’s rapidly-growing communities. In addition, construction has begun on a new emergency department and critical care tower for Surrey Memorial Hospital. The emergency department is expected to open in 2013, with the tower component anticipated to open in 2014.

Over the next three years, British Columbia’s health-care system will benefit from investments such as new medical equipment and modernized health facilities as part of a $1.9-billion health sector capital plan.

Fraser Health provides a wide range of integrated health services to the largest and fastest growing population in B.C. The health authority is committed to improving the health of the population and the quality of life of more than 1.5 million people living in communities from Burnaby to White Rock to Hope.

Quotes:

Health Minister Michael de Jong:

“The Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre will improve access to quality health care for families in Fraser Health. It’s a beautiful facility that has been designed with patients in mind including considerations of the diverse community it serves. The larger exam rooms will accommodate not only the patient but families as well when it begins receiving patients on June 1.”

Jim Pattison:

“Further investment in the Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre is not only creating a better health system for today, but a sustainable future with top medical resources to meet the needs of the rapidly growing Surrey community.”

Dr. Nigel Murray, president and CEO of Fraser Health:

“We hope to start seeing the benefits at Surrey Memorial Hospital that will go on to create a positive ripple effect throughout the whole Fraser Health system. Research from across the world shows that moving outpatient or day treatments including day surgery outside of a hospital environment can deliver efficiencies and improve access, quality and safety in health care. This new centre is an example of how Fraser Health is taking innovative steps to provide the best in health care."

Dave S. Hayer, MLA for Surrey-Tynehead:

“This is a very exciting day for residents of Surrey and throughout Fraser Health. Because of Surrey's rapidly growing population I have worked to see this project completed for more than six years. This outpatient centre and the huge additions to Surrey Memorial Hospital will support our community and the Fraser Valley with world-class health care for many years to come.”

Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon:

“Coupled with the new Surrey Memorial Hospital tower currently under construction, this represents almost $800 million in major capital facilities in Surrey. This outpatient centre will serve families for years to come.”

Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux:

“The centre not only increases access to existing health care services but brings a range of new services to Fraser Health residents. Today’s opening is the beginning of better, faster health care for patients and their families.”

Knowing signs of stroke will save lives

Knowing signs of stroke will save lives

VICTORIA Health Minister Michael de Jong is highlighting Stroke Awareness Month and how families can stay healthy by learning the signs of stroke.

The minister was joined by MLAs to ride the 30-seat Heart and Stroke Big Bike around the B.C. legislative buildings.

Each year in British Columbia, more than 6,500 strokes kill more than 2,000 people. Yet in a 2010 Heart and Stroke Foundation survey, only 45 per cent of British Columbian respondents could name two or more warning signs of stroke, and only 71 per cent said they would call 9-1-1 immediately if someone was having a stroke.

The five signs of stroke are:

· Sudden weakness or numbness.

· Sudden trouble speaking.

· Sudden vision problems.

· Sudden severe and unusual headache.

· Sudden dizziness or loss of balance.

To further support British Columbians in recognizing the warning signs of stroke, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon is launching a video highlighting the five symptoms and the message: Call 911 immediately.

In May 2011, the Province launched the comprehensive $68.7-million Healthy Families BC strategy, which will support British Columbians in managing their own health, reducing chronic disease, including stroke, and ensuring that pregnancy and support programs target the province’s most vulnerable families. Additionally, the strategy will focus on healthy eating, including a public awareness campaign around sodium and sweetened beverage reduction, as well as a provincial restaurant recognition program to promote healthy eating options.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon is a volunteer-based health charity, which leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research, the promotion of healthy living and advocacy.

Quotes:

Michael de Jong, Minister of Health –

“Prevention is the key to reducing chronic disease and keeping families healthy. Learning the signs of stroke and calling 911 immediately can save lives, lessen the human toll and ease the strain on the health care system.”

Dr. Devin Harris, emergency department physician, St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver –

“People can lose up to two million brain cells a minute after a stroke. Patients who go to an emergency department as soon as the symptoms appear have a much higher chance of surviving, and they reduce their chance of lasting brain damage. As a physician, I urge British Columbians not to take the chance and wait. If you have any of the five symptoms, come to hospital immediately. We’d much rather someone come in with a false alarm than sit at home guessing while their brains may be subjected to preventable damage.”

Diego Marchese, chief executive officer, Heart and Stroke Foundation –

“Social media is a great boon to raising public awareness around the five signs of stroke. We’re urging people to circulate this fun YouTube video and help us spread the word. We just launched two free smart phone apps to encourage everyone to eat healthier and manage high blood pressure. And lots of people are using social networking websites to connect with exercise buddies. Technology is making it easier - and even fun - to take care of ourselves.”

Quick Facts:

In Canada, the estimated cost of stroke is $4 billion to $5 billion per year. For B.C., the estimated cost is about $327 million a year.

· Strokes are the third-leading cause of death in B.C. and the number one cause of adult-acquired long-term disability.

· The majority of stroke patients survive, but can be affected by neurological disabilities over the long term.

· After age 55, the risk of stroke doubles every 10 years.

· A stroke survivor has a 20 per cent chance of having another stroke within two years.

· Following a lower-sodium diet and controlling high blood pressure, staying physically active, and being smoke-free can significantly reduce stroke risk.
